Gay Marriage

While I think we gays should have the same rights as everyone else, I feel the concept of marriage is ridiculous. Being gay is not what you are supposed to be – but we accept ourselves by realizing society’s “supposed to be” is bullshit. This should be our springboard to realizing it’s all bullshit – but it’s not. We put ourselves in safe little gay ghettos with rainbow flags and re-enact the worst aspects of the bullshit – selfishness, materialism and bigotry. To save ourselves we begin to ape the heterosexual construct, because it comforts us – we can have the romance on the screen, we can have the house and kids and puppies like our parents. Then we can look out at the villagers with their pitchforks and say, “Hey – we’re just like YOU!” Well – that’s bullshit – we are NOT just like them. We shouldn’t need to be perceived as the same to survive.

Marriage is the result of a sick, oppressive culture. It was invented to enslave people. And while marriage may not be exactly that now, it is still rooted to its original intention of ownership – which sustains itself through mythic romance and jealousy. This mythic romance and jealousy is one of the most destructive forces in our society. When we fight for the “right” to marry we are fighting for the right to be a part of an oppressive culture. Our being accepted in this way means that our oppression may end – but it ensures that oppression will continue. We will simply become part of the oppressive class.
